FAST FACTS

IndoChinese tigers (Panthera tigris corbetti), named after the famed hunter Jim Corbett, are smaller than the Bengal, though their colour is darker. This tiger has short stripes, which turn into spots. Their average body lengths are 256cm to 284cm for males, while females are 231cm to 264cm. Weight is generally 149kg to 195kg for males and 100kg to 130kg for females. Their diet and reproduction is no different from the other sub-species, feeding on cattle and deer, and producing a little of 2 to 3 cubs after about 103 days gestation. The IndoChinese tiger, also known as the Corbett's tiger, is found throughout most of IndoChina, consisting of Thailand, Cambodia, parts of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) and as far down as Malaysia.

Population Status
Although threatened by Asia's Medicine Trade, this sub-species has the second largest population of tigers after the Bengal, with approximately 1,200 to 1,800 in the wild today. There is little information recorded on this sub-species and its status, with numbers only an estimate.
In Thailand's major protected areas, about 250 to 600 tigers are thought to inhabit the regions, while Cambodia's tiger status is about 100 to 200.
Some 18 proposed protected areas in Laos have reported the existence of tigers in all areas, but numbers are not known, and China has around 30 to 40 individuals within the bordering region.
In Vietnam, numbers are believed to be between 200 to 300 with 14 reserves having evidence of the cat's presence in the region - the largest being 1,820 sq.km, while the others are all less than 600 sq.km.
Malaysia has estimated around 600 to 650 tigers found in the protected reserves on the Peninsula, and it is thought that Myanmar's population of the cat is still in abundance.

With a maximum population number of about 1,800 and the help of tiger reserves, the IndoChinese tiger could be saved from danger before its too late, but unfortunately Chinese Medicine is thriving throughout Asia and the tiger's body parts are thought to bring healing powers for all kinds of complaints. In such close proximity to the medicine trade, this tiger faces the danger of poaching for its body parts daily, not to mention the monetary value for its pelt. The fact that it is illegal doesn't appear to be an issue. If it isn't under threat of losing its forested habitat, the tiger's greatest danger is poaching for Asia's medicine trade. The only way that we can help stop this is NOT to buy any products with tiger parts listed as an ingredient, because as Jackie Chan says "Once the buying stops, the killing can too!"
